Understanding What Happens After a Junk Vehicle is Sold

vehicle is sold

Are you planning on selling your junk vehicle but wondering what happens when it’s sold? If so, you’ve come to the right place.

There’s never been a better time than right now to sell a junk vehicle because, in 2022, supply chain issues, the recession, inflation and recent Covid-19 shutdowns have caused cars to be in short supply.

This means that older vehicles, especially junk vehicles, are in greater demand for their used parts because a collector or used car dealership can take the pieces from that junk vehicle and use them for other vehicles they may currently have on the road.

This article will share with you several things that happen once a junk vehicle is sold.

#1 – Buyers Recycle the Parts

As explained in previous articles, one common thing when a vehicle is sold is that the buyer will recycle the parts and use them in other cars currently on the road.

This is especially true if a junk vehicle is less than 15 years old and currently has parts that are still viable even though the car may have recently been in a wreck or it’s possibly been sitting for more than three months or longer.

A used car dealership can recycle those parts of other vehicles they may have purchased from police auctions or other dealerships. Then once those vehicles are in running condition, they can sell them reasonably.

Remember that if your vehicle is less than 15 years old, you may want to consider parting out that vehicle before selling it to a junk car buyer.

Parting out a vehicle allows you to sell the parts on your car individually and profit from the Value of those parts rather than selling the vehicle to a private buyer.

Keep in mind that if you plan on partying out your vehicle, you must specifically know how to remove parts from that vehicle yourself.

Suppose you don’t have any automotive experience. In that case, it’s best to hire someone to remove the most valuable parts from that vehicle for you, or you should specify that the buyer has to bring their tools but make sure they are aware that you won’t have to be held liable if they are injured when removing the parts from the vehicle that you’ve listed online.

#2 – It Goes to the Scrap Yard

Let’s say that your vehicle is more than 15 years old. It’s been sitting for an extended period in your garage, driveway, or property. In this case, that vehicle is most likely not in the condition to have the parts removed, and the best place for that vehicle is to go to a junkyard.

When a scrap buyer purchases the vehicle, the first thing they will do is remove the freon, battery, and tires from the car.

Although the freon cannot be reused, the tires may still be in decent condition, and the battery could be recycled and used on other vehicles. Those are often the first parts that a scrap buyer will look at removing from the car, along with the catalytic converter.

#3 – Core Parts are Removed and Liquids Drained

Once the freon in the battery is removed, the scrap yard will remove the other core parts that the vehicle has.

In some cases, those core parts like the alternator, starter, clutch, and catalytic converter may still be good condition, and those parts can be re-sold to another private party.

After removing the core parts, the buyer will take the time to drain the other liquids from the vehicle, including the oil, power steering fluid, and brake fluid, to get the car ready to be crushed.

Once confirmed that all the fluids have been drained from the vehicle, the buyer will remove any precious metals such as platinum that can be re-sold and other locations nationwide.

Removing the precious metals from the vehicle is important because this also helps lower the emissions that the car will generate once it’s been crushed. It will also make it possible for the scrapyard to reduce its carbon footprint.

#4 – Time to be Crushed

Last of all, most important, once in confirmed that the vehicle is ready to be crushed, it will then be taken through that final phase for the windshield and other window glasses in the car to be broken before the vehicle is destroyed.

After the vehicle’s been crushed, the remnants of that vehicle will be taken to a scrap metal facility where it will then be sold by weight, and then that scrap metal will be used for other cars and purposes in the future.

Fun Facts about Scrapped Car Parts

Besides helping to save the environment, the reality is that a wide variety of benefits come from scrapping a junk vehicle. Here are some of the few benefits that the environment and society realize once the junk is last taken off the road.

  • Carbon emissions and pollution decrease – The first benefit of removing a junk vehicle from the row decides carbon emissions and pollution is decreased because that older vehicle is no longer on the road. This is important because most older cars don’t have the same standards as newer vehicles. Even though the older vehicle may be on the road, running, as usual, the truth is that it’s not helping the environment like most new vehicles on the road today are.
  • The rubber is recycled – Another massive benefit of recycling junk vehicles is that the rubber from that vehicle is recycled, including the rubber tires and rubber parts within that vehicle. Once the rubber is recycled, it’s turned into tires for other cars, welcome mats, and the most common home products today.
  • The plastic is recycled – Vehicles are recycled once the plastic parts are removed. They are used to produce other plastic parts for newer vehicles on the road, along with the most used items in our homes and offices today.
  • Scrap metal is recycled and reused – Last of all, the most important, the scrap metal from the vehicle itself is also recycled, repurposed, and reused to make other newer vehicles on the road today, including people like Tesla’s and most electric cars that you see daily.

Are all scrapped cars worth the same Value?

Although you may be eager to sell your scrap vehicle, the reality is that all junk vehicles are not worth the same.

This is especially true regarding newer vehicles made within the last 15-20 years. They don’t contain the same steel as cars made 50-70 years ago.

Don’t be surprised if an old 1950s DeSoto sitting on your property is worth more than your 2000s Ford Taurus because it all boils down to the actual scrap metals in the vehicle that can be recycled, repurposed, and reused.
